St.-Petersburg (from August, 18th (31st), 1914 to January, 26th, 1924 - Petrograd; from January, 26th, 1924 to September, 6th, 1991 - Leningrad) is the city of federal importance of the Russian Federation, the administrative center of the Northwestern Federal District.

St.-Petersburg is the second (after Moscow) largest city of the Russian Federation. In St.-Petersburg there are representations of the international organizations, consulates of the foreign states, territorial bodies of the federal ministries and departments.

St.-Petersburg situated in the center of crossing of sea and river ways and ground highways, is the European gate of Russia, its strategic center the nearest to the countries of the European Community.

Petersburg is the most important after Moscow economic, industrial, scientific and cultural center of Russia, and a great transport junction.

St.-Petersburg is one of the most important scientific and educational centers of Russia. The greatest Russian poet and writer, the founder of the new Russian literature A.S.Pushkin received his education in the lyceum in Tsarskoye Selo (Tsar's village).

St.-Petersburg is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities of the world; it is one of the first-rate tourist centers of Russia.
