Bryansk is the center of Bryansk region. It is situated on the both banks of the river Desna. After establishing Bryansk region in 1944 the city finally received the status of the regional center.
Bryansk is located at a distance of 379 km to the southwest from Moscow. It is the largest center of the non-chernozem zone.
The following institutions are the most important state establishments of university level higher education of Bryansk:
- Bryansk State Academician I.G. Petrovsky University;
- Bryansk State Engineering and Technological Academy;
- Bryansk State Technical University;
- Bryansk State Agricultural Academy.
In Bryansk great attention is paid to the development of the system of continuous education, to the creation of university complexes.
