Arkhangelsk was founded in 1584 by the Decree of Ivan the Terrible.

Since the beginning of the XVII century the city has been one of the largest seaports in the North of Russia.

Arkhangelsk is the administrative center of Arkhangelsk region. The city is situated in the Northwest of Russia above the 64 parallel at a distance of 1130 km from Moscow. Arkhangelsk stretches out for 35 km on banks and islands of the Northern Dvina, at its flowing into the White sea.

The climate of the city is subarctic, maritime with long winters and short cool summers.

For the most part the life of the city is connected with wood, shipbuilding, fishery and trade. Timber, timber-chemical, pulp and paper and fishing industries are well developed here.

Arkhangelsk is a large international port.

The city is connected with other Russia by waterway, motorcar and railway communications. There are two airports. Airport "Talagui" has the status of international.

The three largest in the North universities work in Arkhangelsk. They are: М.V. Lomonosov Pomor State University, Arkhangelsk State Technical University and Northern State Medical University.

The Northern machine-building higher educational institution, which trains specialists on construction of nuclear submarines, and the Arkhangelsk nautical school, the oldest in the country (founded in 1781) are also in Arkhangelsk.

The great Russian scientist Mikhail Vasilievich Lomonosov was born and spent his childhood in Arkhangelsk region.

Malye Korely (Small Korely), the museum of wooden architecture in the open air, the biggest in Europe, is located not far from the city.
